5 Tips to Boost Your Indie Game’s Visibility on Steam

By Joel | October 30, 2024

As a gamer, I constantly explore new titles through various platforms. Hidden gems often appear while browsing Steam or pop-up on Twitter (X). When reviewing games, I frequently come across them via email or direct messaging from developers.

But despite initial excitement, I sometimes hesitate to purchase if a game's Steam page feels bland, the developer lacks contact info or social presence, or minimal activity in or around the discussion boards. As a reviewer, it’s disheartening to see a promising game fade before it can thrive—often due to a lack of consistent exposure.

The Challenge: Standing Out in a Crowded Market

Launching a game as an indie developer isn’t easy. While some titles like Vampire Survivors manage to capture players’ attention quickly, others—equally deserving—get lost in the noise.

Understanding this struggle has inspired me to compile practical strategies for developers to sustain player interest and boost their game’s visibility. While many of these strategies may seem simple, they require genuine passion and a proactive mindset. Don’t fear failure; consider it a stepping stone for improvement

1. Optimize Your Steam Page

Design a clean and informative Steam page that immediately grabs attention. Include compelling screenshots, a well-edited trailer, and a clear, concise description that showcases your game’s unique features.

Given that over 50% of game discoveries occur through search, prioritizing App Store Optimization (ASO) is essential. Utilize relevant keywords and ensure your tags accurately represent your game’s genre, themes, and mechanics to enhance discoverability.

2. Leverage Social Media

Build a strong presence on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Sharing your website and social media links adds legitimacy and reassures players that there’s a committed developer behind the game.

I’ve often skipped games with intriguing premises simply because they lacked an online presence, raising questions about their developers’ dedication. Share behind-the-scenes content and development updates and actively engage with your audience to foster excitement and build loyalty.

Reach out to influencers, reviewers, and streamers and ask if they’d like to review your game. Many developers I’ve spoken to skip this part because they’re either too afraid or too embarrassed to ask. My suggestion is simple: just ask. The worst they can say is "No." However, don’t send out a key up front; most reviewers may not have the time to play, let alone review the game, making it a wasted key.

Quick Tip: Don’t be afraid of rejection. Reaching out to potential reviewers or streamers is essential for exposure. Even if most say “No,” the one “Yes” could make a significant difference.

3. Create an Attention-Grabbing Trailer

Produce a trailer that highlights your game’s core attractions within the first few seconds. Make it visually appealing and accurately represent gameplay to set realistic expectations. Use concise storytelling, dynamic music, and snappy editing to convey the game’s vibe and appeal. Remember, the trailer is often a player’s first impression—make it count.

4. Price Your Game Fairly

While you may be attached to your game due to the time and effort invested, potential customers won’t share that attachment. Price your game competitively, aligning with genre standards and fair market value. Be ready to offer discounts during sales events—Steam users often wait for these moments to try out new games.

Quick Tip: Consider launching with a slight introductory discount to encourage initial sales and positive reviews, which can drive the algorithm to promote your game.

Quick Tip: If your game looks and plays like Vampire Survivors, it should be priced competitively—no more, no less.

5. Build a Community

Develop a sense of community around your game on platforms like Twitter (X), Reddit, or the Steam forums. Active developer participation—such as responding to feedback, whether positive or critical—enhances player loyalty and engagement.

Developers often overlook their community, which can leave players uncertain about the game’s future. Don’t let that be the case. Even a quick response like, 'Hey, thanks for checking it out,' can make a meaningful impact

Best Practice: When responding to player feedback, focus on addressing comments directly on Steam without redirecting players elsewhere, like Discord. Steam is the primary platform for many gamers, and keeping communication there increases trust and accessibility.

Keep Pushing Forward

Releasing an indie game is challenging, but with the right strategies, you can maximize its exposure and build a loyal fanbase. Remember, promoting your game isn’t a one-time event; it’s an ongoing effort.

The gaming community appreciates developers who are passionate, engaged, and responsive. Stay active, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to adjust your tactics based on player feedback. You’ve put in the work to create something special—now let the world see it!
