Atari 50: Anniversary Celebration - Worth The Hype?

By Nick | March 13, 2023

Are you a gamer looking for something to keep you occupied? If so, you may have heard about the recently released Atari 50: Anniversary Celebration. It is a collection of classic Atari games remastered for modern times.

But is it worth the hype? In this post, we will look at the Atari 50: Anniversary Celebration and give our opinion on whether it is worth it for gamers. We will look at the collection's content, gameplay, and extras to help you decide if this collection is for you. So, let us dive in and see what this collection offers.

The One That Started It All

Gamers everywhere know and love the name Atari, but few are aware of its humble beginnings. Founded in 1972 by the now legendary entrepreneur Nolan Bushnell, the first garage startup with an unshakable faith in gamers had a grand total of nine employees.

Its original team set out to create the world’s first commercial arcade video game, Pong, which proved to be a roaring success that propelled Atari into video game history. Now decades later, gamers everywhere look back on that tiny outfit from Sunnyvale as a harbinger of the gaming revolution ahead.

A Celebration Of Atari's Classics

Atari is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and they've done it in style. The Atari 50: Anniversary Edition includes a remade selection of classic games from the original Atari system. These classics include such titles as Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Pac-Man. In addition to these classic games, the package also has over 100 different games made for various platforms, including 2600, 5200, 7800, Jaguar, and Lynx. This makes it perfect for anyone who wants to play various great games on multiple devices.

The package also includes exclusive content in gaming booklets that have never been seen before. These booklets include details about each game, tips for playing them best, and even rare behind-the-scenes footage from the development process. There are also various online tournaments that you can participate in to win prizes. The package also includes bonuses such as behind-the-scenes content and access to games originally intended only for mobile devices.

The collection also includes six additional new games:

  • Swordquest: AirWorld – Yes, you read that right: After nearly 40 years of waiting, the team at Digital Eclipse has created a new entry in the legendary Swordquest series, inspired by the design concepts of original Swordquest creator Tod Frye. Who will be the first to solve its mysteries – and finally complete the quest?
  • Haunted Houses – The original “survival horror” game for the Atari 2600 gets a modern 3D voxel-based sequel featuring more houses, weird situations, and more urns.
  • VCTR-SCTR – This mashup celebration of the vector era of gaming combines the gameplay from Asteroids, Tempest, and other vector-based arcade classics into a single, continuous challenge.
  • Neo Breakout – An amazing and addictive two-player competition that combines the best features of Breakout and Pong, with a modern graphic style
  • Quadratank – The first new entry in the classic Tank series since 1978 combines features from the original games with four-player fun in team or free-for-all modes.
  • Yars’ Revenge Reimagined – The Atari 2600 masterpiece gets a whole new look. Swap between original and modern graphics at any time!

Its high-quality graphics and sound effects make it feel like you're playing these classics yourself, while the easy-to-use user interface will make navigating through the menus a breeze.

Total Atarian

The Atari 50: Anniversary Collection is an excellent way for gamers to relive the classic gaming experience of the original Atari system and it is a treasure trove of some of the most iconic titles to ever grace the console. There are plenty of extras, including interviews with game designers and other behind-the-scenes content.

The games themselves provide quite a bit of challenge, as well as some nostalgia for those who remember them fondly. The graphics may not age gracefully, but they still offer plenty of enjoyment, which makes up for it.

Besides, who can argue against spending hours bantering back and forth with friends over simulated football from decades ago? So whether you're looking for a return to your days in front of an Atari or want to check out why it was so successful in its heyday, this collection is worth checking out if you haven't already.
