From YouTube to the Big House: Guilty Plea from Plane-Crashing Influencer Spells Trouble

By Nick | May 11, 2023

According to an announcement from federal prosecutors, a 29-year-old YouTuber from Lompoc, California named Trevor Daniel Jacob has pleaded guilty to federal charges and could face up to 20 years in prison.

Jacob was charged with one count of destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation. This comes after he intentionally crashed his airplane while pretending it was an unavoidable accident.

On November 24, 2021, Jacob took off from Lompoc City Airport and claimed that he was flying to Mammoth Lakes. He had outfitted the plane with cameras from several angles, and about 35 minutes after takeoff, he ejected from the plane above the Los Padres National Forest.

Jacob captured video of himself throughout the incident, which currently has over 2.9 million views on YouTube. Once Jacob landed safely on the ground, he hiked to the plane wreck and even cut it up into different parts, which he disposed of in different trash bins around the airport.

In the weeks following the crash, Jacob lied to investigators about not knowing the wreckage's location. He was attempting to obstruct federal investigators from looking into the cause of the crash. Jacob also lied to the FAA aviation safety inspector about the plane's engine, stating that it had quit, and he had to parachute out of the plane. The FAA revoked Jacob’s pilot’s license in 2022. At present, it's unclear when Jacob's sentencing will be scheduled for.
