A Paw-some Shooter with Room to Grow

Raptor Claw's FUR Squadron Phoenix has taken off, and this impression is based on the demo version, with the full game yet to be released. Sporting some nifty and vibrant cel-shaded graphics and intuitive controls, piloting feels as easy as petting a purring cat on a Sunday morning.

The gameplay pays homage to classic shooters like Star Fox 64, offering a nostalgic yet updated experience. Like Star Fox, the game keeps you "moving forward" as your ship follows a path through space, allowing you to focus on blasting enemies and dodging obstacles rather than worrying too much about navigation.

If you're worried about controls, don't be. Your ship's movements feel fluid and organic, almost as if you're controlling a nimble space cat weaving through cosmic hairballs. The game cleverly uses its rail-shooter format to showcase its vibrant cel-shaded visuals, guiding you through colorful space environments that would make even the Lylat System pale in comparison.

Visuals That Purr

The graphics are the real treat here and can be likened to the vibrant style of pop art painters such as Roy Lichtenstein. Just as Lichtenstein would use thick outlines and flat colors to create striking images, FUR Squadron Phoenix employs the same bold outlines and bright, unmixed hues to achieve a visually distinctive look.

The cel-shading technique in FUR Squadron Phoenix simplifies complex forms into sleek, easy-to-spot shapes, making it easier for players to identify objects during fast-paced gameplay. Regarding light and shadow, the game opts for bold, solid borders instead of smooth gradients, which reflects the style of artists who use solid blocks of color to suggest depth while maintaining visual clarity.

The result is a vibrant, comic book-like universe that draws players into its colorful world. So kudos to the graphic designers for creating a visually striking game that keeps players engaged in the action

Purr-fect? Not Yet.

While the visuals are a treat, the gameplay lacks challenge. Enemies follow predictable patterns, and special weapons cause temporary pauses. Then there's the dialogue, which is adorably cute, but appears out of place and clashes with the supposed chaos of space battles, making the fight feel more like a leisurely stroll through a park than an intergalactic invasion.

While I enjoyed playing with the demo, the game does show tremendous promise. However, it needs to sharpen its claws more to captivate seasoned space pilots. I'll be following this one closely.

• Dialogue: Cute characters and chatter feel out of place amidst the chaos of battle. C'mon, devs, make me feel like I’m in a space fight and not at a tea party.
• Action: Lacks the frenetic energy expected from a rail-shooter; it could use a bit more excitement to keep players on their toes.
• Special Weapon Delay: There seem to be pauses when firing special weapons, which can break immersion.
• One Hit Wonder: Taking down large enemy ships with one bomb feels, well, anticlimactic.
• Enemy AI: This could just be me, but enemies only engage when they're practically hugging you, making combat less strategic. It’s like they’re playing hard to get instead of engaging in battle.
