So begins the tale of Metal Suits, the latest offering from Eggtart Games, in their valiant quest to bring 2D platforming action back to the mainstream.
If you long for gameplay reminiscent of Super Turrican or Metal Slug, but set in the far-flung future of 4373 (apparently, the year 3000 was already taken), then Metal Suits might just, well, suit your needs.

In this side-scrolling run-and-gun, you'll step into the cybernetic shoes of Kevin, a war hero turned geriatric veteran whose peaceful retirement aboard a nursing ship goes explosively awry. One moment you're enjoying your golden years with your faithful companion Andy, and the next, you're on a quest for vengeance against the alien menace known as "Golida." Talk about a having a 'ruff' day.
Metal Suits offers a slew of mechanized mayhem, allowing players to discover and pilot various combat suits throughout their journey. Each suit comes with its own unique features and abilities, giving plenty of options to exact your revenge in style. From flamethrowers to machine guns to lightening bolts, there are more ways to rid your foes than there are TV channels in a retirement home.
The game's retro-inspired graphics harken back to the glory days of 16-bit action games, while its fast-paced combat and weapon variety promise to keep your trigger finger itching for more. As you blast your way through hordes of Golida invaders, you'll find yourself switching between ranged and melee weapons faster than you can say "Hey, you kids! Get off my space lawn!"

While the plot may not be winning any Pulitzers—let’s be honest, it’s more 80s action flick than high literature, it does deliver a familiar tale that’s as comforting as your favorite pair of sweatpants. The gameplay, however, is where Metal Suits truly shines.
With its blend of platforming, shooting, and mech-suit customization, it's like someone tossed Mega Man X, and a dash of Gunstar Heroes into a blender and hit "puree." The result? A smoothie of nostalgia with a kick of modern game design.
While the controls are responsive, I found it disappointing that I could only shoot left or right, but not up or down. Additionally, I wish there was an easier way to compare suits before donning them, as I tended to favor the ones that shot lasers over those that lobbed grenades. Still, these are small complaints against a game that has already shown strong gameplay potential.
I should add that this impression is based on the demo, which showcases a lot of spunk. In most demos, you’re relegated to one level, limited weapons, or restricted options. Metal Suits, however, gives you entire levels strung together from various areas of the complete game.
So, if you're ready to trade in your retirement slippers for some heavy metal boots and show those pesky aliens why you don't mess with Earth's senior citizens, Metal Suits might be the game you never knew you needed. Just remember, to take some aspirin with you; you'll never know when the bad hip or arthritis will kick-in.
