A Promising RPG Life Sim That Lets You Shape Your Destiny

Growing up, I always had a liking for the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books; you know, the kind were where each turn of the page led down to some new paths of discovery and mystery. Unsurprisingly, this early obsession with being the master of my own fate naturally evolved into a lifelong love affair with adventure games.

Ray Bradbury once said, "Adventure is the single most important literature in the world, as it takes us to the places we can only dream of." There's just something irresistible about inhabiting a world where your decisions hold all the power; where one ill-advised choice can lead you straight into the belly of a beast or, even worse, send you hurtling back to a torturous loading screen. And recently, I discovered a demo of Mirthwood, by Bad Ridge Games, that tickles that same adventurous spirit.

A Fresh Start in a Fantasy World

Mirthwood is an RPG game that lets you carve out your destiny in a beautifully, yet old-school medieval world. The story is gripping if cliché: you fight your way out while fleeing from a war-torn country and find yourself in a new land brimming with opportunities and fresh beginnings.

Whether you choose to be a humble farmer, a savvy trader, or a valiant warrior, the game provides the opportunity for you to shape your story. In the spirit of classic storytelling, the game invites players into an immersive experience where every choice and consequence weaves a compelling narrative tapestry.

From the start, you're greeted by its cartoonish yet colorful graphics. The art style is a delightful blend of retro and fantasy, with vibrant landscapes that change with the seasons and well-designed characters that bring the world to life. The attention to detail in the environment is impressive, from the gentle sway of crops in the subtle breeze to the buzzing of bees around a hive.

It’s clear that Bad Ridge Games has poured their hearts into creating a visually immersive experience. The game envelops you in a whimsical world where every pixel feels thoughtfully placed, inviting players to lose themselves in its charming and meticulously crafted universe.

Sound Done Right

Sound design and the auditory effects also complement the visuals perfectly. The game’s score is both soothing and epic that shift seamlessly to match the mood of your adventures. Ambient sounds, for example, like the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves, create an atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re truly part of a living world. And the audio cues during combat or an intense situation are satisfying, adding depth to the exploration.

Controls are, for the most part, intuitive and responsive, making it easy to navigate through the various aspects of game world. You can opt to use a controller or the keyboard/mouse combo, and while the controller offers a more natural feel, the use of the mouse and WASD keys felt more intuitive. Still, whether you’re tilling the soil, engaging in combat, or bartering in the marketplace, both sets of controls feel smooth and innate.

Early Demo. Big Potential

Despite being in early access, Mirthwood already shows strong potential to be a standout title. There’s a satisfying progression system that rewards your hard work and strategic planning.

Creating a peaceful life and trading goods between towns provides a deeply fulfilling and immersive experience and the inviting characters and missions encourages exploration and adventure at every new town discovered. While combat currently involves just a few mouse clicks, left to attack and right to parry, it remains engaging, with a variety of enemies and challenges that keep the gameplay exciting as you fight your way to the top.

A Promising Gem in the RPG Life Sim Genre

While the demo limits certain maps and crafting options, the depth of its sandbox elements allows for endless creativity and re-playability. Even in this early stage, the game is shaping up to be a welcome addition to the RPG life sim genre.

Its charming graphics, immersive story-line, and user-friendly controls create a rich, inviting world for players to explore. The game's artistry lies not just in its visuals, but in the harmonious blend of sound and gameplay mechanics that draw you in and keep you engaged.

If you cherish the thrill of building your own destiny, Mirthwood is definitely a game to watch for when it is release later this year.

In the meantime, you can try out the demo on the official Steam Page.
