In an effort to soothe regulators' concerns regarding its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc., Microsoft Corp. signed the papers on its commitment on Tuesday to provide games like Call of Duty on Nintendo Co.'s platforms for a decade.
According to Microsoft President Brad Smith, the two companies "negotiated and inked a binding 10-year legal deal" for Activision's Call of Duty, which will be made available to Nintendo players on the same day and with the same features as its Xbox counterpart.
Microsoft is fighting to win over wary regulators and gaming community members with its acquisition bid for Activision. Sony Group Corp., a competitor in the console market, has objected, claiming that Microsoft will eventually make Call of Duty and other notable games from Activision's library exclusive to its Xbox console and subscription service. According to market research, Call of Duty frequently tops sales charts, and its most recent edition has held the top rank in the US since it debuted in November.
Call of Duty is an unusually adult-themed game for Nintendo, which is known for creating family-friendly media such as the homemaking simulator Animal Crossing or the cartoon paintball shooter Splatoon. But, analysts argued that diversifying into other genres will aid the Kyoto-based game developer in keeping players on its own platforms and preventing them from exploring elsewhere.
The arrangement with Microsoft was confirmed by a Nintendo spokeswoman, who declined to elaborate. Sony has rebuffed Microsoft's offer to sign a 10-year contract with the same terms, despite the PlayStation maker's headquarters is in Tokyo.
