NBA 2K27 PC: How to Fix Crashes, Stutter, and Low FPS

Every new NBA 2K on PC arrives with the same handful of launch week gremlins, and 2K27 is no exception.

The good news is that almost all of them are fixable, and most come down to a few well known culprits: drivers, overlays, shader compilation, and a couple of settings that are quietly working against you. Here is the full troubleshooting run, in the order I would actually try it, from a fan who plays this on PC.

The First Five Fixes (Do These First)

Before anything fancy, run through these. They resolve the bulk of launch week problems on their own.

  1. Update your graphics driver and Windows. NVIDIA and AMD both shipped drivers around the game's launch. An out of date driver is the number one cause of crashes and low FPS.
  2. Verify the game files. In Steam, right click NBA 2K27, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files. This repairs a bad or incomplete install, a frequent cause of crashing.
  3. Close overlays and capture tools. The Steam overlay, Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner, and OBS can all clash with the game. Shut them down and test.
  4. Cap your frame rate to your monitor's refresh. An uncapped frame rate causes both stutter and coil whine. Cap it at your refresh (60, 120, 144) in the driver control panel or the game.
  5. Let the shaders finish building. On first launch the game compiles shaders, which takes a one time fifteen to twenty minutes. Do not force quit during it. Skipping this is a top cause of early stutter.

Fix: The Game Will Not Launch or Crashes on Startup

If NBA 2K27 will not open, hangs on a black screen, or crashes right after the 2K and NBA logos, work through this:

  • Restart the PC, not just the game. A clean reboot clears stuck processes and memory that block the launcher.
  • Run it once with no extra controllers plugged in. Multiple or unusual controllers can hang the game on startup. Launch with just one, or none, then reconnect.
  • Verify files, then update the driver. If it crashes specifically after the logos, that is usually the shader build or a driver mismatch. Let shaders finish, and make sure you are on the latest Game Ready or Adrenalin driver.
  • Drop to a lower graphics preset for the first boot. Get into the game once on Low, confirm it is stable, then raise settings from there.

Fix: Stuttering and Frame Hitches

Stutter comes in two very different flavors, and telling them apart saves you a lot of time.

Local stutter is your PC struggling. It looks like sudden drops to 20 or 30 FPS, brief freezes, or hitching as you move around. That points to the CPU, GPU, or RAM. Network stutter is different: it shows up as rubber-banding players and a delayed shot meter, and it means your connection, not your hardware, is the problem.

For local stutter, in order:

  • Let shaders finish building first. Most launch day stutter is unbuilt shaders. Give it that one time compile.
  • Set Windows to High Performance. Windows power plan on High Performance, and turn on Game Mode in Windows Settings.
  • Turn off VSync in game and cap the frame rate instead. VSync often adds hitching. Cap to your refresh rate a few frames below your monitor's max for the smoothest result.
  • Close background apps. Browsers with many tabs, Discord, and capture software eat the CPU and RAM the game needs.
  • Install it on an SSD. If NBA 2K27 is on an old hard drive, texture loading causes stutter. A modern NVMe SSD makes a real difference.

Fix: Low FPS

If the frame rate is just low across the board, it is almost always settings or drivers rather than a bug.

  • Update the driver first. Always the first move for FPS.
  • Lower the heaviest settings. Crowd detail, shadows, and reflections cost the most for the least visual gain during actual play. Drop those before touching player models.
  • Use DLSS or your card's upscaler. On an NVIDIA RTX card, DLSS Super Resolution gives a big FPS boost with almost no quality loss. We break down exactly which DLSS options to use in our NBA 2K27 DLSS settings guide.
  • Watch your temperatures. Long sessions heat things up, and an overheating CPU or GPU will throttle and tank your FPS. If your fans are roaring and performance drops over time, check cooling.

The 60 FPS Online Cap Is Not a Bug

Here is one that sends people to Google every year. If your FPS looks locked to 60 in Play Now Online, the REC, or the Park no matter what you do, that is intentional.

NBA 2K27 deliberately caps the base rendering to 60 FPS in online modes to keep everyone synchronized across the network. It is not something you broke, and it is not something you can or should fix.

Offline modes like MyCareer and Play Now will run at your full frame rate.

If Nothing Works

If you have run all of this and still have problems, a clean reinstall on an SSD is the last resort, and it clears up stubborn file corruption that verifying misses.

Beyond that, check the Steam discussions for your specific GPU, since some issues are hardware specific and get patched quickly in the first weeks after launch.

FAQ

Why does NBA 2K27 keep crashing on PC?

Usually an out of date graphics driver, corrupted game files, or a conflicting overlay. Update your driver, verify the files in Steam, close overlays and capture tools, and let the first launch finish building shaders. Crashes right after the logos are typically the shader build or a driver mismatch.

How do I fix stuttering in NBA 2K27?

First tell the type apart. Local stutter (drops to 20 to 30 FPS, freezing) is a hardware or settings issue: let shaders build, set Windows to High Performance, turn off VSync and cap your frame rate, close background apps, and install on an SSD. Rubberbanding and a laggy shot meter are network issues instead.

Why is my NBA 2K27 locked at 60 FPS online?

That is intentional. The game caps online modes like Play Now Online, the REC, and the Park to 60 FPS to keep the match synced across players. Offline modes run at your full frame rate.

How do I get more FPS in NBA 2K27?

Update your driver, lower the heaviest settings (crowd, shadows, reflections), turn on DLSS or your card's upscaler, cap your frame rate to your refresh, and keep your PC cool so it does not throttle.

Does NBA 2K27 need an SSD?

It is strongly recommended. Running it from an old hard drive causes texture loading stutter, while a modern NVMe SSD loads smoothly and cuts down hitching.

What is the first thing to try if NBA 2K27 runs badly?

Update your graphics driver and verify the game files in Steam. Those two steps alone fix the majority of launch week performance problems.
