LA Rams' Surprising Resilience: From a Seahawks Victory to Holding Ground Against the 49ers
When you think of classic video games, there are a few titles and platforms that spring to mind immediately. But deep within the annals of video game history is a gem of a title, tucked away on a console that didn’t quite dominate the mainstream. That game? Space Hulk. That console? The 3DO.
For the uninitiated, Space Hulk, based on the popular Warhammer 40,000 universe, combined tense, tactical combat with the thrilling danger of space-faring adventures. You were put in charge of a squad of Terminator Space Marines, faced with the challenge of cleansing derelict ships, the 'Space Hulks', of the monstrous Genestealers.
What made Space Hulk's gameplay so captivating was that the game demanded strategy and foresight with patience being the player's true weapon. Each move, each shot, each decision, if not careful, could spell life or death for your squad. The real-time gameplay, combined with turn-based tactics, provided a unique hybrid experience that kept players on the edge of their seats.
The 3DO's version of Space Hulk was rich in atmosphere. Sound design, for example, was exceptional with the eerie creaks of the ship, the distant screeches of lurking Genestealers, and the heavy breathing of your marines built a palpable sense of dread. With every corner turned you would half expect to see a Genestealer lunging at you. Talk about intense.
As good as the gameplay was, it wasn’t all smooth warp-travel. One notable quirk was the game’s control scheme. Adapting a complex PC game to the 3DO's controller was no easy task. Oftentimes, directing your terminators felt like you were trying to herd cats in a zero-gravity chamber. It was frustrating and felt a little quirky, but it was part of the game's undeniable charm.

By today's standards, Space Hulk on the 3DO might play and look a bit dated. The graphics are blocky, the controls a touch clunky, but for those who played it, it remains a nostalgic journey into the heart of 90s gaming. Of course, in video games, some stars shine brighter than others, and for a brief moment, Space Hulk was one of the brightest in the 3DO galaxy.
The game itself is a testament to a time when games and developers dared to be different especially when consoles like the 3DO provided a unique stage for such creative risks. It's a title that evokes fond memories and intense gameplay moments even with its charming quirks and all.
