Project Zomboid Build 42 Best Occupation: The Jobs Worth Picking
By Nick | October 3, 2026
In Project Zomboid, your occupation is the skill package you drop into Kentucky with, and it also decides how many trait points you have left to spend on everything else.
A good one hands you a head start on a skill that is slow to grind or a survival edge you will lean on from day one. Build 42 shook this up with a batch of new crafting jobs, but the core answer has not changed much. Here are the occupations actually worth picking, and when to skip them entirely.
Each job gives you starting boosts to certain skills and costs a share of your character points. Unemployed is the exception, it gives no skills but leaves you the maximum pool of points, around eight, to spend however you like.
So the real question with any occupation is simple: are the skills it hands you worth more than the trait points it costs? For the jobs below, the answer is yes.
The Best Occupations (S Tier)
Lumberjack. The ultimate beginner profession and the one I steer new players toward. It is cheap, it gives Axe skill, Maintenance, and a point of Strength, and it comes with a free 25 percent faster axe swing. An axe is the best early melee weapon in the game, so that swing speed is a straight increase in how many zombies you put down per minute. Simple, strong, forgiving.
Angler. The food problem solved in one pick. Angler stacks Fishing along with a little Butchering and Foraging, and fishing is currently the strongest food source in Build 42. Take this and you are self sufficient on food from the start without hunting down fishing books, which quietly removes one of the biggest ways a run falls apart.
Engineer. The horde answer. Beyond the carpentry, electrical, and masonry skills, Engineer lets you craft pipe bombs without first finding the magazine, and pipe bombs are the single best way to clear a crowd in Build 42. If your plan involves ever fighting a large group on your terms, this is enormous.
Mechanic. The long game pick. If you intend to rely on vehicles, Mechanic is the best role for keeping them running, and a working car is the difference between looting a town and raiding the whole county.
Great Beginner Friendly Picks
If you just want to survive and learn, these give you a weapon or a tool plus useful combat or foraging skill, which smooths out the brutal first week.
Fire Officer. Axe skill and strong fitness or strength support, a clean combat start.
Park Ranger. Foraging and trapping lean, so you eat off the land while you learn to fight.
Security Guard. A night owl build with sneaking and awareness that suits careful, patient players.
The New Build 42 Jobs
Build 42 added a wave of crafting occupations. They are niche, but if you are planning a settled, self sufficient base they are genuinely strong.
Blacksmith. One of the most interesting picks, because it can actually refund you points while handing over Blacksmithing, Maintenance, and a free Blacksmith Knowledge trait. If your endgame is forging your own gear, start here.
Welder, Crop Farmer, Livestock Farmer, Tailor. Each front loads one of the new crafting or survival skills, welding, agriculture, animal care, or tailoring. Pick one only if that system is central to your plan, otherwise you are paying for a skill you will barely touch.
When to Just Go Unemployed
Unemployed gives you no starting skills but the biggest pile of character points, which you then pour into traits. For experienced players who would rather buy stats like Strength and Fitness, or stack several positive traits, Unemployed is a legitimate power pick.
The tradeoff, however, is a slower start on skills, so it suits players who already know how to survive the opening days. New players are usually better served by Lumberjack or Angler.
Pair It With the Right Traits
Your occupation is only half the character. The points it leaves you go into traits, and the two decisions should work together, a combat occupation with fitness and strength traits, or a crafting occupation with skill boosting traits.
For most players, Lumberjack is the safe, strong start, Angler solves food, Engineer solves hordes, and Mechanic pays off once you are mobile.
The new crafting jobs are worth it only if that system is your whole plan, and Unemployed is the min max route for players who would rather buy traits than skills. Pick the job that fixes the problem you are most likely to die to, then build your traits around it.
