Project Zomboid Cheats and Debug Mode Guide (Build 42)

By Ian | July 28, 2026
Isometric scene of a partially built wooden shack at night with several workers wearing hard hats and tools scattered on the floor.

Project Zomboid is famously merciless.

This is how you died, and usually a lot sooner than you hoped. So it is no surprise that players go looking for a little help, whether that means spawning a car to learn the mechanics, testing a base build, or simply messing around after a rough week of survival.

Zomboid does not have old school typed cheat codes, but it has two powerful doors: debug mode for single player, and admin commands for multiplayer servers. Here is how both work in Build 42, along with the commands worth knowing and a few tips that do not require, uh cheating, at all.

How to Enable Debug Mode

Debug mode is the developer toolkit built into the game, and switching it on takes about ten seconds.

In your Steam library, right click Project Zomboid, choose Properties, open the General tab, and find the Launch Options field. Type -debug into that box, including the dash, then close the window and launch the game. You will see a new Debug indicator on the main menu.

Once you load into a single player game, a small mosquito icon appears on the left side of the screen. That is your debug panel. Click it and you get a wall of developer tools: an Items List for spawning anything in the game, options to teleport, control your health and moodles, trigger events, and much more. Want a fully kitted survivor, a working van, and clear skies?

Debug mode gives you all of it in a few clicks.

Important: turning on debug mode flags that save as cheated, which disables Steam achievements on it. If you care about achievements, use debug on a separate save.

Multiplayer Admin Commands

On a multiplayer server, the equivalent power lives in admin commands.

If you host or run the server, you can grant yourself admin status, then type commands into the in game chat with a forward slash in front, or straight into the server console without the slash. The single most useful command is /help, which lists every command available, and /help followed by a command name explains exactly what it does.

Here are the ones you will reach for most:

CommandWhat it does
/additem "user" "Base.Axe"Spawn an item straight into a player inventory
/godmode "user"Toggle invincibility for a player
/invisible "user"Make zombies unable to see you
/noclip "user"Walk through walls and objects
/addvehicle "Base.VanSpecial" "user"Spawn a vehicle next to a player
/startrain and /stoprainControl the weather
/gunshotFire a gunshot sound to lure or test a horde
/teleport "user1" "user2"Teleport one player to another
/playersList everyone currently online
/setaccesslevel "user" "admin"Grant another player admin powers

Item and vehicle names use the game internal IDs, like Base.Axe or Base.Nails. If you are unsure of an ID, the debug mode Items List is the easiest way to browse and find the exact names.

A Few Survival Tips (No Cheating Required)

If you would rather earn your survival, these tips will keep you breathing far longer:

  • Move slow and sneak. Sprinting and fighting raises your exertion and noise, and noise brings the horde. Crouch, walk, and pick your fights.
  • Respect the first week. Early on, loot quietly, secure food and water, and find a defensible spot before the power and water shut off.
  • Manage your moodles. Hunger, thirst, fatigue, and panic all stack up and get you killed. Keep them in check rather than pushing your luck.
  • Base near what you need. A home close to water, food, and an exit route beats a fortress you cannot resupply.
  • Watch for the helicopter event. In the first week a helicopter can pass over and drag every zombie in the area toward you, so plan to hunker down when it does.

Just Remember

Debug mode is a fantastic way to learn Zomboid without losing hours to a single mistake, and admin commands keep a multiplayer server fun and fair.

Just keep in mind that debug disables achievements on that save, so if you are chasing them, spin up a separate world to experiment in.

Then take what you learned back into a real, permadeath run, because in Project Zomboid, surviving honestly is the whole point.
