Star Fox vs EX-Zodiac: The Ultimate Showdown!

By Joel | October 4, 2022

We all have our favorite video games from childhood that we just can't seem to forget. For many of us, those games were likely on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

One of the most popular games for that system was Star Fox, which was one of the first games to utilize Nintendo's Sper FX chip. In recent weeks, however, an indie developer Pixeljam released a game called EX-Zodiac that claims to be an updated and improved version of Star Fox. But is it really? Let's take a look at the two games side-by-side and find out.

Graphics

It's the age-old question- which is better, the classic game or the new release? In the case of EX-Zodiac and Star Fox, there can be only one answer! Let's take a look at the graphics of each game to see which one comes out on top.

There's no denying that EX-Zodiac has better graphics than Star Fox. The colors are brighter and more vibrant, the enemy ships are more detailed, and the explosions look downright impressive. However, there's something to be said for the 16-bit graphics of Star Fox. They have a certain charm about them that is lacking in EX-Zodiac. In the end though, it really comes down to personal preference. Some people will prefer the updated graphics of EX-Zodiac while others will prefer the retro style of Star Fox. As much as I enjoyed the look of Star Fox back in the day, I can't help but be impressed with the look and feel of Ex Zodiac.

Verdict: EX-Zodiac

Controls

The controls are where EX-Zodiac really shines. The controls are much more intuitive and easy to use than those of Star Fox. In Star Fox, you often found yourself overcompensating or overcorrecting due to the finicky controls and lack of multi-button functionality on the old SNES controller. With EX-Zodiac, however, the controls feel natural and make flying your ship feel effortless especially with the updated mouse support.

Verdict: EX-Zodiac

Sound

The sound and music in Star Fox may be simple compared to the more technologically advanced EX Zodiac, but it's a retro gaming gem. The SNES may not have had the same capabilities as modern consoles, but Star Fox's tunes still manage to impress. The sound effects are sparse and minimalist, with bleeps and blips reminiscent of arcade games from the 80s.

And though Star Fox may not have a fully orchestrated soundtrack, its musical themes are catchy and memorable. On the other hand, EX Zodiac boasts a more modern soundtrack filled with electronic beats and synthesized melodies. But in trying to chase after current trends, it loses some of the charm and nostalgia of older games like Star Fox. When it comes down to it, sometimes less really is more. And in this case, Star Fox proves that age doesn't necessarily equal outdatedness. Its simplicity is exactly what makes it stand out and ahead of its time.

Verdict: Star Fox

Gameplay

When it comes to gameplay, EX Zodiac and Star Fox are almost neck and neck. But when it comes to pure nostalgia factor, Star Fox takes the cake. Sure, the graphics might not be as flashy and the gameplay may seem a bit clunky now, but there's just something about playing a game on the Super Nintendo that adds an extra layer of excitement.

Plus, Star Fox came out at a time when gaming was still relatively new and unexplored, making each level feel like a fun adventure. So while EX Zodiac may offer a more balanced gameplay experience, Star Fox will always hold a special place in our retro gamer hearts.

Verdict: Star Fox

Fun Factor

As the debate rages on between Nintendo enthusiasts about Star Fox vs. EX Zodiac, one thing remains clear: both games offer a unique blend of retro nostalgia and timeless fun.

In Star Fox, players become an ace pilot as they defend the galaxy against the evil Andross. Meanwhile, in EX Zodiac, players step into the shoes of a brave pilot, using their skills and flying abilities to defeat the terrorist organization and save the world.

So which game is more fun? That's entirely up to personal preference and gaming style. Do you prefer straight up shoot 'em up action or arcade fun with a healthy dose of stratgy mixed in? Either way, players can expect a dose of SNES-era charm mixed with captivating gameplay. So whether you choose Star Fox or EX Zodiac, prepare for an out-of-this-world gaming experience.

Verdict: Tie

And the Winner Is...

So which game is better? That's hard to say. They both have their pros and cons. However, if I had to choose one, I would say that EX-Zodiac is the better game overall thanks to its improved graphics and controls. That being said, Starfox is still a great game with a lot of history behind it. It's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of retro games or simply want to see where Zodiac got its inspiration from. So who's the winner in this little debate? It's simple: you, me, us, the gamers in general!
