A news release has reported that the new Super Mario Bros. movie has achieved $200 million in the US and Canada on its opening run of five days. In addition, it has surpassed the box office launch record for animation, bringing in a worldwide estimated gross of $377 million.

Super Mario Bros. achieved the highest worldwide opening total for the year in its debut, garnering a revenue of $235.1 million. The movie, Ant-Man, and the Wasp came in second, with payments totaling $225.3 million for its opening in February.

The film, an adaptation of the infamous 1985 'Super Mario' video game series developed by Nintendo, boasts Chris Pratt as the titular role, with Charlie Day and Anya Taylor-Joy in charge of portraying the characters of Luigi and Princess Peach, respectively. The ensemble cast of the critically acclaimed film The Disaster Artist features noted actors Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Sebastian Maniscalco.

Actor Charles Martinet, who has famously lent his voice to Mario in numerous series installments, makes a special appearance in the movie. There was significant feedback from game fans who posited that he should have been selected for the principal role instead of Pratt, yet he still offers a highly-regarded performance in part.

The iconic Super Mario Bros. follows the adventures of New York-based plumbers Mario and Luigi, who are suddenly thrust into a mystical otherworld while repairing a broken water pipe. With their brotherly bond severed, Mario begins his journey to reunite with Luigi and restore balance to the strange new land he has stumbled upon. Given the reopening of the solid movie theater, the summer box office season is expected to be prosperous for theaters. In addition, Chris Pratt is set to star in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" sequel in May.
