Your subjects are lazy, and nothing in your kingdom gets done unless you are literally looking right at it. As such, it became a surprise hit in 2025 for exactly that reason. But the gaze mechanic takes a minute to click, and the first run or two can feel like juggling with your eyes.
So here is how the game actually works, and how to stop dying in the first thirty seconds.
The King is Watching, released in July 2025, is a roguelike city builder with a strong streak of real time strategy and tower defense.
Each run has you building up a kingdom from scratch and surviving escalating waves of enemies, then starting over a little smarter when you fall.
It sold half a million copies with a ninety percent positive rating on Steam, so the hook clearly works, but the fun only clicks once you understand the gaze.
The Gaze is the Whole Game
Your castle is a five by five grid where you place buildings.
The twist that defines everything is this: Buildings only work while the King's gaze is on them. Your gaze is a small shape you drag around the grid by clicking and holding the left mouse button, and it only covers a few tiles at a time, starting at three.
Look at a building and it produces. Look away and it stops. Deciding where to point your attention, moment to moment, is not a side task in this game. It is the game.
The One Rule that Changes Everything
Here is the single most important thing a new player can learn.
Once a unit producing building reaches its maximum number of units, you can stop gazing at it and those units stay active. You only need to look back if the count drops below maximum.
This is the secret to not drowning. Fill your army buildings up to the cap, then take your gaze off them and point it at production. A defense that runs without your attention is what frees you to actually build.
Resources and Buildings
Buildings do one of three things:
They generate resources.
They transform resources into other resources.
They produce units
Early game staples include Wells for water, a Tree for wood, and a Small Field for wheat.
In those opening minutes, prioritize Wood, Wheat, and Gold, since they unlock most of the early buildings and the all important gaze upgrades.
One habit matters more than any other here. Cluster your buildings tightly, in a two by two and then a two by three block, so a single gaze covers as much production as possible.
Building an Army
Your castle begins with no defenses at all, which means units are the only thing standing between you and the next wave.
Over a run you will unlock peasants, longbowmen, hunters, swordsmen, mages, and more. Ranged units like longbowmen chip away from safety, while melee units hold the line.
The golden rule is to have your army built and topped up before a wave arrives, not scrambling to make units while you are already under attack.
Upgrade Your Gaze
The most impactful upgrade in the game is your gaze size, which grows one tile at a time up to a maximum of six.
Every extra tile means more of your kingdom is working at once, and since your attention is the real bottleneck, nothing else moves the needle quite as much.
When you can afford a gaze upgrade, it is almost always worth taking.
Surviving Your First Runs
The King is Watching is roguelike, so losing is part of learning, not a sign you are bad at it.
Expect to die, notice what overwhelmed you, and open the next run cleaner. Cluster tight, max out your army buildings so they run without your gaze, funnel early resources into wood, wheat, gold, and gaze upgrades, and you will get a little deeper every single time.
That loop of dying, adjusting, and pushing further is the whole appeal.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the gaze in The King is Watching?
It is the King's field of view, a small shape you drag over your castle grid. Buildings only work while your gaze is on them, and it covers just a few tiles at a time, starting at three.
Do buildings keep working when you look away?
Mostly no, production stops when your gaze leaves. The key exception is a unit building at maximum capacity, whose units stay active until the count drops.
How do you upgrade the gaze?
Through in run upgrades. Your gaze size grows one tile at a time, from three up to a maximum of six, and it is usually the most valuable thing you can improve.
Is The King is Watching hard?
