Under the command of Captain Benjamin Briggs, the ship embarked on its fateful voyage from New York City to Genoa, Italy, on November 7, 1872. The ship's cargo consisted of 1,701 barrels of raw alcohol, bound for commercial use in Europe.

The Enigmatic Discovery

On December 5, 1872, the Mary Celeste was spotted by the crew of the British brigantine Dei Gratia about 400 miles east of the Azores. What made this encounter truly baffling was that the Mary Celeste was found abandoned, with no sign of its crew. The ship was adrift but otherwise undamaged, and its sails were partially set.
