A Day in the Life of Not Quite a Good Cop

As you cruise through the rain-slicked streets, you'll find yourself juggling a smorgasbord of police work that would make even the most seasoned TV cop break a sweat. From ticketing illegally parked DeLoreans to chasing down perps in heart-pounding pursuits, The Precinct serves up a hefty dish of law enforcement activities.

The game's graphics nicely depict 1980s urban decay, with neon signs reflecting off puddles and gritty alleyways calling for exploration. While there's still some jerkiness in the animations, it's nothing a pair of Ray-Bans can't smooth over.

Boom, Bang, Crash!

One of the neat features is the destructible environment as nothing says "justice served" quite like plowing through a fruit stand in hot pursuit of armed suspect. It's like playing in a Michael Bay movie, minus the excessive lens flares.

The Nitty-Gritty

However, only some things in Averno City shine like freshly polished badges. For one, the lack of realistic damage to your patrol car is a bit of a letdown. I was hoping there would be more visual damages. After all, what's the point of a high-speed chase if you can't proudly display your battle scars back at the precinct?

Second, there's also a certain rigidity to the game's mechanics that feels at odds with the chaotic nature of police work. The predictable sequence of events, for example, – eat, respond to a robbery, engage in a shootout, car chase, foot pursuit – starts to feel like you're following a script rather than patrolling a living, breathing city.

The Verdict (So Far)

While the demo offers a glimpse into the world of 1980s law enforcement, it sometimes feels like it's playing it too safe. The game, in my opinion, could benefit from embracing more of the unpredictability and danger inherent in police work, or perhaps even flipping the script entirely.

Imagine, for example, if instead of playing by the book, you could choose to be the kingpin of Averno's criminal underworld. Now that would be a game that could really shake things up in this neon-noir sandbox. At least give the option of playing as one.

In the end, however, The Precinct demo is like a rookie cop on their first day – full of potential, but still needing some seasoning before it's ready to make the rank of detective.

I actually enjoyed the demo and I'm hoping the full release will iron out these kinks and deliver the thrilling, unpredictable experience that Averno City deserves.
