What if the world’s oldest “pyramid” isn’t in Egypt—and parts of it might not be man-made at all?

Archaeologists working at Gunung Padang in West Java, Indonesia, argue the hilltop megalith is far older than Egypt’s pyramids and may have begun as a natural lava formation that was later reshaped and built upon by people over many millennia.

Their studies suggest multiple construction phases, with deep layers possibly dating back as far as 25,000 to 14,000 years ago, and younger stonework added in the Holocene, including the last few thousand years.

Ground-penetrating surveys and core samples point to stacked building layers and void-like cavities beneath the terraces, which some researchers interpret as chambers or engineered spaces.

However, this sweeping timeline is contested. Several geologists and archaeologists say the deepest strata reflect volcanic processes rather than human handiwork, and they argue the most credible dates align with much later activity—long after the last Ice Age.

Critics note that radiocarbon samples can date organic material in soils between stones, not necessarily the construction itself, and warn against conflating natural columnar-andesite patterns with masonry. They also emphasize that extraordinary claims require clear evidence of human tooling, quarrying marks, or artifacts securely tied to the earliest proposed layers.

If verified, the Indonesian site would upend current models of when complex architecture emerged, suggesting sophisticated stone-working existed long before settled agriculture.

But for now, the debate hinges on further excavation, peer-reviewed data, and independent confirmation. In short: Gunung Padang likely blends a natural volcanic core with human modification—how early that modification began remains an open question.
