Picture it. A zombie shambles into your imaging suite. It is not here for a check up, but you are a professional, so you order a full skeletal survey anyway.
You slide it behind the plate, step back, and take the shot. What comes back on that X-ray would be one of the strangest films any radiographer has ever read, because a zombie is a body doing all the things a body physically cannot do.
I work in healthcare, so I spend a lot of time thinking about what is happening inside people. Naturally, I started wondering what is happening inside the things that used to be people.
So let us do the unthinkable and read the undead like a patient file. Here is what a zombie would actually look like on an X-ray, and why the results make no medical sense at all.
First, What Does an X-RAY Even Show?
Quick primer, because it matters. An X-ray is basically a density map. Dense stuff like bone absorbs the beam and shows up bright white.
Soft tissue like muscle and organs barely stops the beam, so it shows up in dull gray. Air and gas let almost everything through, so they show up black. Metal is denser than anything in the body, so a bullet or a shard of shrapnel lights up like a tiny star.
So a zombie film would mostly tell us about three things: its bones, the gas building up inside it, and all the hardware people have been firing into it. Every one of those is going to be deeply wrong.
The Radiology Report: Patient Z, Undead

The Bones Tell a Grim Story
Living bone is constantly rebuilt by your body. Dead bone is not. As a corpse breaks down, it loses the organic scaffolding and mineral that make bone strong and bright on film, so an older zombie would show demineralized, almost translucent bone with a thin, moth eaten texture. A freshly turned zombie would still look fairly normal on the skeleton. A months old one would look like it is held together by spite.
You would also see old fractures that never healed. In a living person, a break lays down a fuzzy bridge of new bone called a callus within weeks.
A zombie has no working repair crew, so every arm it snapped and every rib it cracked while walking into doorframes is just there, unhealed, forever. That is a big part of why they move so wrong; the frame is full of damage nobody ever fixed.
The Gas is the Real Horror
This is the finding that would make a real radiographer put the coffee down. When a body decomposes, bacteria in the gut and tissues produce gas as they break everything down.
On an X-ray, that gas shows up as dark pockets scattered through the soft tissue and creeping along the blood vessels. In the living, we have a name for gas in the tissues, and it is never good news; think gas gangrene, a genuine surgical emergency.
A zombie would be full of it. Its abdomen would be bloated and radiolucent, its muscles marbled with black pockets, its vessels lined with gas instead of flowing blood.
Medically, this is a body that is actively rotting from the inside while it walks around trying to bite you. Delightful.
The Part that Breaks All the Rules: How is it Still Moving?
Here is the question that ruins zombies for anyone with a medical background. Movement is chemistry. Your muscles contract when a molecule called ATP lets protein filaments pull against each other, and, just as importantly, ATP is also what lets them let go afterward.
When you die, ATP production stops. The filaments lock together and cannot release, and the whole body stiffens. That is rigor mortis. A real corpse goes rigid within hours and only loosens later, once the muscle proteins themselves start breaking down.
So a zombie is stuck in an impossible middle. It has no ATP to contract muscles, no ATP to release them, and no fresh oxygen or fuel to make any.
By every rule of human physiology, it should be either frozen stiff or too decomposed to hold itself upright. The fact that it shambles anyway is exactly what makes it supernatural. There is no biological engine left to run it.
An X-ray cannot show you a soul, or a virus, or whatever dark magic is doing the driving. It can only show you the wreckage that thing is piloting. And the wreckage says this body should not move.
Why Headshots Work, Medically Speaking
Games and movies drilled one rule into all of us: aim for the head. Shooting a zombie in the chest does nothing, and now you can see why on the film.
A bullet through the torso just adds one more bright dot to a body that has no working heart, lungs, or circulation to lose. You cannot kill what is already dead by damaging organs it stopped using.
The head is the exception because, in nearly every version of the myth, whatever animates the zombie lives in the brain. Destroy the command center and the puppet drops.
It is fiction, but it happens to line up with real neurology: the brain is the one piece of hardware you truly cannot work around. Everything else on that X-ray is already offline.
So What's the Diagnosis?
If Patient Z were real, the report would read like a contradiction from top to bottom: a demineralized skeleton, unhealed fractures, tissue full of decomposition gas, no circulation, and no chemical way to move a single muscle, attached to something that is very much moving.
The honest clinical conclusion is that a zombie is medically impossible, and that is precisely why it is scary. It is a body that kept the horror of death and threw out all the rules that are supposed to come with it.
Come to think of it, that mix of dead tissue and stubborn motion is the same reason a fresh corpse draws a crowd of hungry onlookers.
