You can place weapons in the front, back, and either side of your ship; if you want a plasma cannon on the left and a turret cannon on the right, you have the flexibility to do so. However, pay attention to weapon descriptions, as some can only fire in one direction. So keep your ship's orientation in mind to make the most of all the firepower at your fingertips.
